Tell me more about the track 'Loving You'?
"The track was pretty much written when I got involved. Me and Matt had been to a couple of gigs where we were both playing and kind of got to know each other alittle bit. We've actually worked with alot of the same people and I had only heard good things about him. I went along to watch him do a gig at Union Chapel (London) at his acoustic set and I was REALLY impressed with him on stage. We spoke about doing abit of writing and said it would be really fun to do a duet and offcourse i've been really lucky in the past. I've done some really brilliant duets with Bryan Adams. I think it's so scary going into that situation with another artist because you don't know! You could say you are going to work with somebody and then you don't come out with a great track! (Excitedly) "Luckily this has just been a dream for the get go you know. It's such a great song, we had such great fun working on it so far and the reaction has been incredible, so it just feels really right."
"It's quite exciting when somethign comes together so easily."
Did any of your healthy eating habits rub off on Matt as I understand he likes chesse strings with marmite.
"Is he?? (Laughs). "Do you know what my experience of Matt's eating habits...I think he's quite healthy actually (Laughs). He's having pea soup as we speak and some weird chicken stuff. Maybe he's just trying to impress me by being healthy as he knows i'm sporty!"
You've sold over 12m records on your own (besides75m with The Spice Girls) though I have seen that the only Spice Girl to have sold more than you is Geri. Would you like to take her mantle and when are you planning on making new music?
"Well I've been doing lots of different things over the last few years, abit of theare, abit of telly but my number 1 passion is music. I do miss being out on the road with my band. Having this opportunity to work with Matt has really inspired me to get back into the studio. I'm gonna start writing again quite soon, maybe this year. I'm gonna be touring with 'Jesus Christ Superstar' again this October and then i'm touring with Jools Holland in November and December. Next year i'm going to dedicate putting a new album together."

Your are the only female UK star to hit the number one spot as part of a quartet, a quintet, a duo and solo. How does that feel?
I love that statistic! (Laughs). It's a really fun one. I'm kinda looking out for a trio...I'll try and make that happen. The music industry has changed so much and record sales are so much lower than what they were so I was lucky to be part of the glory days in the 90's when your sales were huge. I think now the people who stick around are the people who really love what they do that's what is so lovely about working with Matt, you know he's a real visionary, a real artist and it is a pleasure to working with people like that."
That's actually really nice of you to say that about Matt, he's a real credible artist but there is alot of media who don't like X factor artists, so what advise would you give to people going on reality shows who want to make a proper career out of it and be credible?
"I think anybody who wants a career in music just has to take their chances and if that is going on a TV talent show then you've got to give it a shot. I think it's whatever people feel comfortable doing. I'm sure that when I was 17 if there was something like The X Factor at that point I would be lining up and auditioning."
Mel added: "What is really lovely actually is how our fans have come together to really support us that is good. We really appreciate that. "
